Humans are Capable of Telepathy, Heres How

Many find the idea of telepathy to be that of science fiction, something that exists only in the imaginations of people around the world. But this is not the truth, telepathy is entirely possible to anyone. The typical description found online states the definition for telepathy is “the supposed communication of thoughts and ideas other than the known senses.” This definition falls flat of what telepathy looks like in the real world, although it most certainly does apply to basic human telepathy, which is the written word.

Humor me on this test:

Outside a large coastal warehouse, a seagull rests on an old wooden support beam that erects from the ocean below. The seagull grips a piece of meat it found in a nearby shopping center. It flips it up in the air with its beak and catches the fish, letting it drop directly down the seagull’s throat.

Now, I will proceed with the assumption that this scene was easily visible to you in your mind. Without speaking, gesturing, or even being near you, I have been able to send you a visual that is as real as your imagination can conjure. This is at the core of what attracts many readers to fiction writing. Even though these are fictional stories, you are able to watch them unfold as you scan the complex of symbols and structure that we call language. It is interesting to take a step outside of all you have learned in your life about writing and reading. Try to ignore all you know about letters, punctuation, and words. Now look over this very page and imagine how a wild animal may feel looking at this page, while the trained telepathic receiver, or reader, is able to see an entire world and step into the mind of the writer. As these paragraphs I am writing now are my organized thoughts, you are able to read my thoughts using the written word as placeholders for emotion and meaning.

From an outside perspective, perhaps a wild animal as mentioned earlier, or perhaps in a more interesting example, an early human. To an early human, seeing a modern reader looking at a computer screen at what looks to be blocks of designed lines would be highly confused and there would be likely no way to describe this to them without calling it a transfer of information that does not necessitate speaking or even seeing one another. That is if this early human would be able to overcome all the other factors that may affect them or pull their interest.

With writing being established as a means of expressing thoughts in a telepathic manner, that requires coded mediums that are the words, what could this evolve into? The possibilities for a new type of telepathy is growing in the high levels of today's artificial intelligence researchers.

Elon Musk, the founder of Neuralink, explores the future of computer interfaces. Their research works to create a computer chip that can be implanted in a brain. They plan to begin their work with treating brain disease But are working to grow their practices into human enhancement. On their website, they state that they are working to create “brain-machine interfaces to connect humans and computers.” This will open up a whole new door to the sort of telepathy we are capable of. With the brain implant, it could be possible to have computer assistant brain reading. Maybe two people with implants would be able to transfer information to one another without needing to speak. Maybe they will have full conversations together, within their heads. To the outsider like the early human, or even the modern reader, this will surely look like telepathy. It should look that way because it is.

This is technically possible today, even without the Neurolink. You can achieve this by simply texting with someone. While for some this may break the rules of what telepathy can be, this is at least something interesting to consider. While texting is very hands-on, the basic rules of telepathy are in effect. Texting partners are soundlessly transferring complex information between each other, and doing so in a way that past generations would call science fiction. While it is easily argued that smartphones have grown to be much like an extension of the owner, more specifically an extension of their brain. Within this view, notice how the text conversations you have are complicated mental information transfers that take place in thin air.

Depending on your definition of telepathy, you can practice it today. Just as you are right now as you read these words. As writer Stephen King puts it, writing is the “meeting of the minds” between writer and reader, and is much more personal than may be assumed off first glance.
